First elected in 2010, Ana Bailão is the Toronto City Councillor for Ward 18, Davenport, a member of the Mayor's Executive Committee, and Toronto's Housing Advocate. When first asked to Chair the Affordable Housing Committee, it was at a time when external housing funding was shrinking. Councillor Bailão created new opportunities by reducing obstacles for private-sector builders and providing incentives to build more affordable housing.
Councillor Bailão has worked hard to create economic development opportunities by championing the use of social procurement, and by expanding business opportunities in Toronto through her work as a board member of Invest Toronto – the primary business, sales and marketing corporation for the City of Toronto. She also initiated the establishment of the Rio de Janeiro-Toronto Friendship City Agreement – creating stronger ties with the largest economy in South America.
A graduate of the University of Toronto, she achieved success in the private sector, holding senior roles in the banking and healthcare IT fields before her election to City Council. She is a recipient of the Order of Portugal and has used her years of experience, energy, and consensus building skills to help create a more livable and vibrant city for visitors, businesses, and Torontonians.
