Chris Cummings took up the post of Chief Executive of TheCityUK in September 2010. TheCityUK is the industry body formed to promote the UK financial and related professional services sector and deliver a sustainable and successful industry at the heart of UK plc.
Financial services is the UK's most successful export earner, contributing £47bn to the nation's coffers last year. In addition, the Treasury benefited from £63bn in tax take from the sector's activities. Over £20bn of tax comes from those international firms that choose to be based in the UK. The sector employs 2 million people around the country – with two thirds outside London.
London is the world’s pre-eminent financial centre, and is both a UK and European asset. The work of TheCityUK focuses on international trade, tax and regulatory policy, global promotion of the sector, and as a necessary pre-condition, closer to home, winning back the confidence of the UK electorate.
Prior to this, Chris was the Director General of the Association of Independent Financial Advisers. Before joining AIFA, Chris was in management consulting at PwC, and has held senior roles in banking and insurance.
He advises the Treasury on financial services, has written two books on financial services regulation, and is a regular columnist, commentator, and speaker on financial and regulatory issues.
