Dr. Herman Daems is Chairman of the Board of BNP Paribas Fortis (www.bnpparibasfortis.com), Chairman of the Board of KU Leuven (www.kuleuven.be) and Chairman of the Board of BARCO (a publicly listed technology group on Euronext www.barco.com ). Herman Daems was Chairman of the Board of Gimv from May 1999 till June 2011 (a publicly listed PE and VC firm on Euronext www.Gimv.com), Daems made a career in academia, policy-making and consulting. He is an emeritus professor at the Faculty of Economics and Management of K.U. Leuven, Belgium. He was chairman of EVCA, the European Association of Private Equity and Venture Capital in 2004-2005, member of the executive committee of EVCA between 2002 and 2006 and Chairman of IPEV from 2005 till 2012. He has chaired the Belgian Corporate Governance Committee which sets, as provided by law, the governance code for boards of listed companies in Belgium. Professor Daems is a member of the executive committee of the VBO/FEB, the Belgian employers association and holds several board positions.
From 1990 till 1993 Daems was a partner with a Member firm of the Boston Consulting Group. From 1995 till 1998 he was Director of the Cabinet of the Flemish Minister of Economics and Media. From 1991 till 1994 Daems was Director of the Leuven MBA-program. And from 1987 till 1990 Daems was Visiting Professor at the Harvard Business School where he taught Competition & Strategy in the MBA-program. He held visiting faculty appointments at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of California in Davis (UCD), IESE in Barcelona and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. He has advised several European companies and the OECD.
During the academic year 1997-1998 he held the Francqui chair at the Université Catholique de Louvain at Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium with a series of lectures entitled: Corporate governance and Corporate Strategies: Reflections on the performance of firms in Belgium. In 1999 he received the tri-annual VBO-FEB prize from the Belgian employers association, held the A.Van Melkebeke chair in Antwerp and was awarded the 2009 Prize for Leadership of the VMA, the Flemish Management Association.
Daems published and edited several books among which in English: Holding Company and Corporate Control; Managerial Hierarchies (also appeared in Portuguese); The Rise of Managerial Capitalism and Strategic Groups, Strategic Moves and Performance. In Dutch he published Concurrentie: Analyse en Strategie en Concurrentie-strategie & Concernstrategie. On behalf of the King Bauduin Foundation he wrote a book on foreign direct investment and take-overs in Belgium entitled Buitenlandse Invloed in België. De gevolgen voor de Strategische Beslissingsmacht, this book also appeared in French. Daems made educational videos in English, French and Dutch on Competitive Strategy. At the end of 1998 he published a book on the structure of capitalism in Belgium: De paradox van het Belgische kapitalisme. Recently he published a collection of his regular columns in the Belgian press under the title: Anders Gedacht, Ideeën over ondernemers, aandeelhouders en bedrijven. (Also available as an e-book)
Daems studied first Theoretical Physics (1968) and later Economics (1972) at KU Leuven. He holds a PhD (1975) in Economics from KU Leuven. He was a fellow of the Social Science Foundation in New York, fellow of the German Marshal Fund in Washington, NATO-fellow, and a fellow of the Nationaal Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek and CIM in Belgium. At Harvard he was a N.S.B. Grass Doctoral Fellow in 1971-72. He was twice a Fulbright Fellow.
In the past Professor Daems held board positions with : Belgacom (from 1994 till 1998), Brussels Airport Company where he was also a member of the strategic committee (from 1998 till 2004), Glaverbel where he was a member of the audit committee and closely involved with the issues of the public to private transaction (from 1998 till 2003), GITP International (from 1995 till 2006). In the US he was a board member and chair of the auditcom of Coware Inc. (from 1999 till 2010) based in San Jose, CA.
Currently he is a board member of Vanbreda Risk and Benefits (Antwerp, Belgium) (since 2007) and Domo Chemicals and chair of its audit committee (since 2007). He is chairman of Domo Investment Group (since 2011), Member of the Board of Domo Chemicals (since 2008) and Chairman of Lannoo.
In the nonprofit sector, Herman Daems is a Chairman of the Board of KU Leuven and member of the board of the Festival of Flanders in Ghent. From 2004 till 2011 he was a member of the Board of the UZ Leuven, the Leuven university hospitals.
