John Paul Rathbone was appointed Latin American Editor in April 2010, having previously edited the FT's Lex column.

He joined the FT in 2008 from Breakingviews, where he was a financial commentator for several years and founding correspondent. Prior to that, he worked at Reuters and the World Bank.

Rathbone is a graduate of Oxford University, where he read Anthropology, and Columbia University, where he earned a Masters in Economics. He became a senior member of St. Antony’s College, Oxford, in 2006.

He is the author of The Sugar King of Havana: the rise and fall of Julio Lobo, Cuba's last tycoon (The Penguin Press, 2010).
