Former President of Panama

Martin Torrijos Espino was the 42nd President of the Constitutional Republic of Panama, serving from September 1, 2004, to June 30, 2009. He was elected as leader of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD). He holds degrees in Economics and Political Science from the prestigious Texas A & M University. For over two decades Torrijos has been an economic advisor to international companies in the communication, construction, agricultural-exports, and maritime industries. As President, his administration oversaw the country's economic growth with social stability, significant foreign investment, the implementation of the Canal expansion project, the modernization of the State, a vigorous program of public investment in infrastructure, an increase in the tourism sector, and social-policy on various fronts. Among other roles, Torrijos currently acts as Panama's Deputy in the Central American Parliament, Vice-President of the Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin America (COPPPAL) and is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Global Center for Development and Democracy.
